David Wood was appointed Director of the Boise VA Medical Center in May of 2012. Prior to this assignment Mr. Wood had been Director of the Oklahoma City VAMC since August of 2006. Mr. Wood has been employed with the Department of Veterans Affairs since 1991. He received a Masters of Health Administration degree from Duke University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resource Management from Brigham Young University. Mr. Wood was the Medical Center Director of the Butler Pennsylvania VAMC from September 2004 to August 2006. Prior to Butler, he was the Medical Center Director for four years at the VAMC located in Bath, New York. In addition, he has served as the Chief Network Information Officer in VA Healthcare Network Upstate New York and as the Public Affairs/Planner in El Paso, TX. In March of 2005, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award from BYU Idaho. Mr. Wood has also been on several details to Central Office including ones related to the recent Information Technology reorganization and the Department of Veterans Affairs Capital Asset Realignment for Enhanced Services program. Mr. Wood has achieved the status of a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Nate was born and raised in Portland Oregon. He served in both the Oregon National Guard and U.S. Army from 1991 to 1999. He began his VA career in logistics at the Portland Oregon VA Medical Center in 1999. In 2003 he was accepted into the VA Technical Career Field (TCF) intern program as a Prosthetics Representative. Upon completion of the TCF internship in 2005 he was selected as the Chief of Prosthetics at the Boise VA Medical Center. He served in that role until 2013 when he accepted his current role as Facility Chief Logistics Officer (FCLO). Nate has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Portland State University.

Andrew Wilper, MD, MPH, Chief of Staff

Dr. Wilper graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 2003; completed his Internal Medicine Internship in 2004; completed Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency in 2006 and also completed Harvard School of Public Health with a Master’s in Public Health in 2008. Dr. Wilper has been with the Boise VA Medical Center since 2008 as a Staff Physician and then as the ACOS/Medicine. Dr. Wilper has extensive experience and knowledge of health care practices, processes, and programs in and outside of the VHA. His practical skills with patient care, and how to deliver the best patient centric care within our current health care system provides a unique insight to where we are and where we need to be as our medical center programs develop and our patient population grows.

Angelina Knesel, MSN, RN, CNL, Nurse Executive

Angelina Knesel was appointed Associate Director for Patient Care Services, Chief Nurse Executive, at the Boise VA Medical Center (BVAMC) in April 2020. Ms. Knesel received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Boise State University in Boise, ID and Masters of Nursing at St. Xavier University in Chicago, IL. Ms. Knesel currently holds a specialty certification as a Clinical Nurse Leader. Ms. Knesel launched her nursing career with the BVAMC in 2001 as a VALOR nursing student. Her background includes critical care nursing, clinical information system development and implementation, Critical Care Nurse Manager, Associate Chief Nurse for Inpatient, Outpatient, Surgical, Home-Based Primary Care and Specialty Services, and Chief of Education/Designated Learning Officer. Her accomplishments include selection as a Top Ten Scholar at Boise State University, the Hall of Fame Award for outstanding organizational leadership, and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs Award for Excellence in Nursing for the BVAMC and VISN 20. Ms. Knesel has also led numerous organizational initiatives to develop emerging leaders in critical positions within the VA. For example, in 2019, Ms. Knesel obtained national approval and implemented a Post Baccalaureate Nurse Residency Program at the BVAMC. In addition, she is a certified mentor and has served as a formal mentor in the facility LEAD program since 2013.
